Dear Paul and Marco,

Below is the agreed position that the CERN Management is bringing to the
December FOCUS meeting regarding the Sun platform issue.

"Discussions in FOCUS have established the need for a second platform, aside
from the main Linux/Intel platform, for software development and validation
including use of commercial software engineering tools. The agreed SUNDEV
service will be deployed by IT Division to meet these purposes. In addition,
some experiments have expressed the need for a batch system with full data
access to be used for verification of their physics programs on a second
platform. The CERN Management has discussed this issue and come to the
conclusion that CERN lacks the human and materials resources to deploy and
maintain such a service. The Director for Scientific Computing will
communicate this conclusion to the spokespersons of these experiments and
suggest that they invite their collaborating institutions to contribute such
a service."
